|

Yes, it's that time of the year again when I get another new toy to play with. Windows Server 2008 is (go on you've guessed by now) the latest version of Microsofts windows server line.
But why would I want to use HyperOS with a windows server OS. That's a good question and there is more than one answer, some of which you may cause you to prick your ears up (well, rub your eyes anyway).
Firstly, I've always been a staunch advovate of using HyperOS in my business for test bench machines. I find it far better than Ghost, and a hell of a lot quicker as well. We need to test our software on many systems and configurations and that includes server platforms, both the standard and small business versions, so HyperOS does a great job for me there.
The second is an awful lot more interesting. Windows Server 2008 has an updated and overhauled core architecture a generation on from Vista, it's also a lot lighter as it doesn't need all that fluffy consumer stuff, and it's a heck of a lot faster than Vista and runs all the Vista drivers I've thown at it so far (except for my sound card for some reason, I'll be working on that later).
But it's a server you say, not a very friendly environment. Well yes, your true, but hidden away in the install is all the glitz and glamour that gives Vista it's shiny Aero interface and all the other bells and whistles that go with it. Sure you have to jump through a few hoops to get them all turned on, but the end result is a machine that from my experience so far is twice as responsive as Vista and every bit as compatible. Plus with the new virtualization you can runn multiple OS's inside the OS (which is nice !!).
So you want to know how to transform your windows server into a super workstation.

I'll have lots to add as I get to grips with it, I'm still waiting for my 64 bit version, but my 32 bit version addressess all 4GB of my RAM, something Vista 32 doesn't do.
I'll post my HyperOS experiences in a seperate thread, but for now, if you have the dough (or a nice action pack or MSDN subscription) have a play, a server running as a workstation makes a great office/development machine.

Interesting...but not suprising, since XP x64 is based off of Server 2003
I wonder if you are looking at what may become Windows7 ??? |
