|
|
after a troublesome install of windows XP 64 PRO on a pair of seagate sata 2 drives configured nvidia raid (0) array I find that any attempt to run partition magic results in a partition table error #110 I have retraced my steps by the book and reinstalled everything several times , updated to the latest bios and tried just about everything .
is this a known fault with nvidia raid (onboard) or maybe even an XP64 bit oddity I dont know (first time with 64 bit.
however the OS is wonderfull and is blisteringly fast using it on the array with no partitions . showing no problems and healthy as far as the raid software is concerned.
anyone had this problem before .
anyway if I cannot partition the array then my recently purchased HyperOS(vista version) will be useless .
error 110 is to do with incorrect partition table info and also shows up as bad mbr , I have used the seagate diagnostic tools to correct this , but as soon as I use nvidia raid it crops up again , but only when I try to use partition magic .
any help ? |

Found this on the Dell forum - With thanks to Chipstone.
Partition software on raid 1 environments is not a good idea; it defeats the purpose of you original intent, to mirror the data between two identical drives. Raid 1 does not work with three partitions over two drives.
You can create a Raid 0 with multiple drives and you can partition the aggregate capacity into multiple logical drives, but once you get into Raid mirror/stripping, or parity configurations you need to use the Raid controller to change any specifications on the array.
You now have a conflict between the Raid controller looking for two drives with identical size, and Windows with 3 partitions.
First, backup all your important data to a source other than the raid array. Then try to undo what you did with Partition Magic; you may or may not be successful. You other alternative is to delete the current Raid configuration via the Raid controller and start from the beginning.
You will need to determine if you want Raid 0 to create multiple partitions; easily accomplished with Windows disk management after you’ve created you primary Raid 0 partition of a specific size, install the operating system on the partiton created , then via Windows disk management create additional partitions on the remaining space of the Raid 0 capacity.
If you need to have Raid 1 with two drives you cannot alter the configuration. You can always create a Raid 1 with two drives and on the same controller add a third drive as a Raid 0 and you can partition that drive. |

thanks for the prompt reply , I am only interested in raid (0) stripe , having biult all of my own PCs since 2003 , 4 in all. they have allways had Raid 0 , I have had one with a promise controller and two with a via controller and all have accepted being partitioned in the usual way , the only possible reason for this not working is either something peculier with Nvidia raid , or a 64bit (new to 64 bit) or something to do with the fact I am using 2 SATA 2 (sata 300) drives 320gig each
I was thinking of trying a different partitioning software.
there seems to be no option for resizing the drive in windows . |
